About the Approved Medical Deputising Services (AMDS) program

The AMDS program enables prescribed medical practitioners (a doctor who does not hold specialist registration in general practice with AHPRA to gain general practice experience.

About the AMDS program

The AMDS program offers prescribed medical practitioners the opportunity to gain general practice experience.

AMDS program participants can claim items from the Medicare Benefits Schedule for providing after-hours services on behalf of another doctor (deputising services). AMDS program participants can provide services:

  • at a clinic
  • at a residential aged care facility
  • in a patient’s home.

Prescribed medical practitioners on the AMDS program satisfy section 19AA of the Health Insurance Act 1973.

Read about eligibility criteria and how doctors and service providers can apply to participate on the AMDS program.

Why the AMDS program is important

The AMDS program allows general practitioners to deputise after-hours care for their patients to different service providers. The program helps to:

  • give people access to health care outside of business hours
  • reduce the need for patients to go to emergency departments for after-hours care
  • ensure doctors who work business hours can have time off
  • provide prescribed medical practitioners an opportunity to gain general practice experience in after-hours settings.

Who we work with

We work with Services Australia and AMDS service providers to administer the program.
