Description:

This framework supports the continued success of the Newborn Bloodspot Screening program.

It provides a robust, transparent process for national decisions on the conditions screened as part of Newborn Bloodspot Screening program.

Please note: there is a new, transparent decision-making pathway agreed, and a new process to identify conditions under development (learn more about this pathway). This means:

  • the decision-making pathway outlined in the policy framework (Policy Area 5, Part 1) is no longer in use. The committees referenced in the assessment process no longer exist and a new decision-making pathway has been agreed by all Australian health ministers. Learn more about the new pathway.
  • the condition nomination forms at Appendix C and D are no longer in use. In line with the new decision-making pathway, a new process is being developed to invite the public to identify conditions for consideration
  • the decision-making criteria (Policy Area 5, Part II) continue to guide consideration of the benefits and harms of newborn screening.

We will review this framework as part of our work to expand newborn bloodspot screening programs.
