Traumatic Brain Injury Mission

The Traumatic Brain Injury Mission is investing $50 million to improve patient recovery after brain injury. It will support projects that predict recovery outcomes, or identify the most effective care and treatments.

About the Traumatic Brain Injury Mission

The Traumatic Brain Injury Mission is investing $50 million to improve the lives of patients with traumatic brain injury.

This Mission supports research to improve patient recovery after brain injury. This includes projects that predict recovery outcomes or identify effective care and treatments, to reduce barriers to living the best quality of life after a traumatic brain injury.

Why it is important

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability and death in Australia. Common causes are falls, car accidents and assault. These injuries can lead to complex, long-term problems affecting patients’ personalities, relationships and independence.

Objectives

The objectives of this Mission are to:

  • better predict recovery outcomes after a traumatic brain injury
  • identify the most effective care and treatments
  • reduce barriers to support people to live their best life after a traumatic brain injury.

Meeting our objectives

The Traumatic Brain Injury Mission Expert Advisory Panel has refreshed the Mission’s Roadmap and Implementation Plan. This is to advise the Minister for Health and Aged Care on the strategic priorities for research investment through the Mission. These documents will inform future Traumatic Brain Injury Mission grant opportunities.

We published the current Roadmap and Implementation Plan in April 2025.

The draft Roadmap and Implementation Plan received community feedback through a national consultation between 8 January 2025 and 10 February 2025. See the Traumatic Brain Injury Mission Roadmap and Implementation Plan Refresh National Consultation Report – January 2025.

An international panel of experts also provided feedback on these documents on 6 February 2025. See the Traumatic Brain Injury Mission International Review of the Roadmap and Implementation Plan report.
