MRI comes to Dubbo: savings in travel and costs

The diagnosis of cancer, strokes and many other conditions will improve significantly for people who live in the central-west of NSW, with the announcement that the Australian Government has selected Orana Radiology in Dubbo for a Medicare-eligible MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) unit.

New Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme listings

The Australian Government has approved the listing of a new drug to treat osteoarthritis and expanded the listing of two drugs to treat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and hepatitis B at a cost to the PBS of $221.6 million over four years. These drugs will be available from 1 August 2006.

Eye scan for heart disease wins award for excellence

Predicting the risk of heart disease through a non-invasive eye scan has won a young Melbourne researcher the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research for 2006. Associate Professor Tien Wong, 38, from the Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne, led a team that has developed a novel method of predicting cardiovascular disease by scanning the eyes for blood vessel damage.
