Needle and syringe programs: your questions answered

Do people with diabetes have to pay for needles and syringes when people who inject drugs can get free equipment?

People with diabetes can access free needles and syringes as part of the National Diabetic Services Scheme. To register for the scheme, people with diabetes can contact the Diabetes Australia Office in their state or territory. There is a contact list at the back of this booklet. Diabetes Australia will also be able to inform people with diabetes where they can dispose of their used needles and syringes.

If people with diabetes and other medical conditions do not have access to disposal facilities through Diabetes Australia, community pharmacies or local councils, they can dispose of used needles and syringes at Needle and Syringe Programs.
