Government sites

Department of Health and Ageing
The Department promotes, develops and funds world class health and aged care services for all Australians.

Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC)
The Private Health Insurance Administration Council is an independent Statutory Authority that regulates the private health insurance industry. It also collects and disseminates financial and statistical data regarding health funds, as well as information about private health insurance to enable consumers to make informed choices.

Private Health Insurance Ombudsman (PHIO)
The Private Health Insurance Ombudsman is an independent body established to resolve complaints about private health insurance and to be the umpire in dispute resolution at all levels within the private health insurance industry.

The Ombudsman's services are available to health fund members, hospitals, medical practitioners (including some dentists) as well as health funds.

Medicare Australia
Medicare Australia is Australia's primary health information management and payment agency, and administers many major government health programs and schemes including Medicare, Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme, Australian Organ Donor Register and The Australian Childhood Immunisations Register. Medicare Australia also detects and prevents fraud and inappropriate servicing; provides international consultancy services; is playing a key role in the shift towards patient centred care, evidence-based medicine and the development of Australia's health information and payments arrangements of the future.

Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)
The AIHW is Australia's national agency for health and welfare statistics and information.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
An independent statutory authority, the Commission administers the Trade Practices Act 1974 and the Prices Surveillance Act 1983 and has additional responsibilities under other legislation. Under the national competition policy reform program the Trade Practices Act has been amended so that, with State/Territory application legislation, its prohibitions of anti-competitive conduct apply to virtually all businesses in Australia.

Private health industry peak organisations

Australian Health Insurance Association (AHIA)
The AHIA is a peak organisation that represents 30 health funds throughout Australia and collectively covers more than 94% of the private health insurance industry.

Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA)
The APHA is the principle association representing private hospitals and day surgeries on a national basis. It provides a wide range of representation, information, technical support and member services. APHA's membership continues to grow and has links with state-based private hospital associations, Catholic Health Australia and Mayne Health.

Catholic Health Australia
Catholic Health Australia is the national organisation representing more than 680 Catholic health care sponsors, systems, facilities, and related organisations and services. This represents the largest non-government provider grouping of health, aged and health related community care services in Australia.

Australasian Day Surgery Association (ADSA)
The number of private free standing day surgery units as well as the units incorporated into hospitals has accelerated over the last five years. ADSA represents it membership to provide greater support of their business issues as well as their quality management programs, clinical services and political activities. There is now the opportunity for growth in day surgery services, with a view to the future the ADSA has progressed to a new position of strength for it's members. This combination will allow the ADSA to maintain its independence and self-determination yet have the benefits of extra resources for members.

Australian Resource Centre for Hospital Innovations (ARCHI)
ARCHI promotes the dissemination of information and resources related to innovative health care delivery both in hospitals and at the hospital/community interface.

Consumer sites

Australian Consumers' Association (ACA)
The Australian Consumers' Association is a not-for-profit organisation. They publish consumer information to keep you informed, test products so you don't buy duds, and lobby on your behalf.

Consumers' Health Forum of Australia (CHF)
Consumers' Health Forum is a national peak organisation providing a voice for all health consumers. CHF's strategic direction is set by its voting members. Voting members are consumer organisations, which represent a broad range of health consumers such as illness groups, disability groups and specific population groups such as youth, older people and women.
