Aged care volunteer stories – Nola

Aged care volunteer Nola shares what inspires her to volunteer.

Promoting well-being through volunteering

For aged care volunteer Nola, it’s bringing joy to someone’s day, solving problems and fostering connections that fulfils her.

Nola started volunteering 14 years ago when she joined a senior women’s group and saw there was a need for greater support for elderly women experiencing isolation and depression.

“I saw first hand the urgent need for more volunteers in our ageing society,” Nola says. “Witnessing loneliness and a lack of support – especially for those without family – motivated me to contribute.”

This involvement led to volunteering in other organisations. Now Nola volunteers at the Spectrum Federation of Ethnic Senior Citizens Club and its clinical governance committee, the Greek Women of the Northern Suburbs and the Hellenic Women’s Federation Victoria.

She organises activities such as excursions, cultural events, information sessions and dance classes for older people.

“As a dance instructor, I find it inspiring to see older people engage in activities that promote their well-being, despite their health challenges,” Nola says.

“Organising excursions and witnessing the excitement of seniors discovering new places is equally rewarding. Simply spending time with someone who lives alone and offering companionship is a deeply meaningful experience.”

Through her work with Spectrum Federation and the clinical governance committee, Nola has also had opportunities to advocate for better aged care services. She describes her advocacy work and knowing that older peoples’ voices are being heard as empowering.

“The elderly, like all of us, require care, attention, and companionship,” she explains.

“Whether small or large, our efforts can make a real impact and a significant difference in someone’s life.”

When asked whether Nola would recommend volunteering in aged care to other people, the answer is simple: “Absolutely!”

“Volunteering has been a joyful and enriching part of my life. Through giving, I receive so much more in return,” Nola says.

“It gives me purpose, energy and a deep sense of fulfilment.”
